The Granary, Native Architects’ office

PERFORMANCE triple glazed timber windows and doors at The Granary office for Native Architects
We specify Green Building Store’s PERFORMANCE range of windows and doors regularly because they offer a good balance between cost and performance. They look great in our new office – we’re really thrilled with them. The useability of the windows and doors has also been great.

Architects Practice undertakes conservation renovation project and hands-on self build

A 19th century traditionally constructed clamp brick building, The Granary is the new location for Native Architects’ office and sits within a working farm just south of York.

The project recently won Best Commercial Project award and was the first recipient of a special Sustainability award at the York Design Awards 2018.

The renovation and conversion of the derelict agricultural building was carried out as a hands-on self build project utilising skills from within the Native Architects team, with Native completing all the work themselves with the exception of the electrical installation, telecoms, some of the plastering, and the floor finishes.

Green Building Store’s PERFORMANCE range of triple glazed timber windows & doors were specified for the project.

Design

The building comprises the main two storey granary with a new extension. The project aimed to use traditional, low carbon, vapour open ‘breathable’ bio based natural materials throughout with a high level of recycling of materials reflecting the firm’s fabric first approach and commitment to sustainability.

Low embodied energy materials included Yorkshire grown construction grade hemp cast against the solid brick walls; hempcrete blocks; wood fibre floor, wall and roof insulation; reclaimed plywood for wall finishes, floor structure and joinery; recycled roof timbers; and hotlime for repointing, new brickwork, and internal plaster finishes.

The project has recently received an ‘A’ EPC energy rating.

The building achieved an airtightness rating of 3.45 m3.h-1.m2 @50PA which, with the high levels of insulation, allows a Wiking woodburning stove to provide the heating for the 120m2 of floor space.

Triple glazed timber windows and doors

Green Building Store’s PERFORMANCE triple glazed timber entrance doors and tilt and turn windows were specified for the project, finished in RAL colour 7037. They were instrumental in achieving an airtightness rating of 3.45 m3.h-1.m2 @50PA.
