It has been announced today (Friday 1st October 2010) that Green Building Store’s Denby Dale Passivhaus project has been shortlisted for ‘Sustainable Housng Project of the Year 2010’ in the prestigious Sustainability Awards 2010..
The Denby Dale Passivhaus has sought to provide a solution to the urgent need to drastically cut the CO2 emissions from buildings in the UK and has tried to create a low-cost and easily replicable template for low energy Passivhaus construction, using techniques and materials familiar to British builders. The project was built by Green Building Store’s construction division and is the UK’s first cavity wall Passivhaus. To get cavity wall to perform to Passivhaus standards the Green Building Store team had to develop original design details, especially around junctions.eg floor to wall, wall to roof etc.
The Denby Dale Passivhaus has demonstrated that the Passivhaus methodology can be applied to cavity wall construction. It will give UK designers and builders the option of designing Passivhaus buildings using cavity wall construction, in addition to the other construction methods more commonly used for Passivhaus on the continent. The original design details developed for the project can also be used as a template for the construction industry as to how to minimize thermal bridging, improve energy efficiency and maximise the airtightness of projects built using cavity wall construction, whether the project is aiming for the Passivhaus standard or not.
The Sustainability Awards recognise and reward outstanding achievement in Sustainability in the built environment and are a key benchmark for achieving best practice in the sector. This year’s Sustainability Awards will see an important shift away from the traditional awards evening. In a joint venture between the UK-GBC and Building magazine, there will be a 10 week educational, innovative awareness campaign that places a prolonged spotlight on all shortlisted sustainability pioneers. This will include a gallery exhibition at the Building Centre, home of the UKGBC, ahead of the awards ceremony, featuring detailed storyboards of each shortlisted entry. The exhibition will run in the main galleries at The Building Centre from Tuesday 19th October until Tuesday 30th November.
The Sustainability Awards will be held in London on 30/11/10.
Denby Dale Passivhaus has also been shortlisted for the RIBA Yorkshire White Rose Architecture Award 2010 – Sustainabilty Award.
