Finding a supplier that takes the time to understand your needs and your budget is a fundamental necessity. Particularly for Passivhaus projects. Having worked on the design of over 28 Certified Passivhaus homes during the last 10 years I’ve learned discovering a trustworthy a supplier can be harder than you think. …That’s why I have the folks at Green Building Store on speed dial.

The Steel Farm Passivhaus project, winner of the prestigious ‘Small Projects: UK Passivhaus Awards 2015’ was designed by Architect Mark Siddall  Director of LEAP: Low Energy Architectural Practice.

Steel Farm is a reinterpretation of the traditional Northumberland farmstead. The materials and form of the house are in harmony with the region. Built using traditional cavity wall construction it is the first privately owned Certified Passivhaus in the North East of England.

Green Building Store supplied Ecopassiv triple glazed timber windows and doors (now superceded by Green Building Store’s ULTRA range) and the MVHR system for the project.

This thoughtful design, constructed using a sensible budget, culminates in a vibrant home with a distinct sense of place. The windows are proportioned and positioned to act as the eyes to the world. They playfully reveal views and vistas at critical moments while washing the walls with natural daylight.

Located near Hexham in the North Pennine Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (ANOB) planning restrictions dictated the use of traditional materials including natural stone and slate roof. These requirements were easily fulfilled without compromising the owners’ desire for Passivhaus standards of performance.

In 2015 the house won the Small Projects category at the UK Passivhaus Awards. A popular documentary series about Steel Farm reveals what the house does differently and how to create a Passivhaus home, without breaking the bank. To discover more go to PassivhausSecrets.co.uk

Mark also specified other products from Green Building Store including  components of the Pro Clima airtightness system and, with the support of services engineer Alan Clarke, he specified a PAUL Novus 300 unit. To complete the MVHR design, he used Green Building Store’s MVHR design service. Mark commented:

“Green Building Store is far and away ahead of everyone else in terms of knowledge and expertise in designing and supplying MVHR systems for low energy and Passivhaus projects.

I met up with Green Building Store’s Andrew Farr at an early stage to discuss the project. The design and the installation became very straightforward. As one of the UK’s leading commissioning engineers, if not THE leading commissioning engineer, Andrew commissioned the MVHR system in early 2013.”
