Passiframe have been consultants and main building contractors on a radical retrofit project of an old solid stone walled cottage that was modelled in Passivhaus Planning Package (PHPP) to comply with the Passivhaus renovation standard EnerPHit, although the project did not go for certification. Green Building Store’s triple glazed timber ULTRA windows and doors were specified.

Design

The house was stripped back to a bare shell. All details and elements were modelled to comply with the Passivhaus renovation standard EnerPHit, although the project did not go for certification.

The floor was excavated to allow for floor insulation before internal stud-work could be rebuilt featuring internal wall insulation and an internal wrap of airtight membrane to prevent air leakages.

Energy performance

A blower door test (airtightness test) was carried out near the end of the project with a reading of  0.89ach achieved, the equivalent of a 50mm square hole/leak path in the entire building. Building regulations requirements would have accepted a 450mm square hole in this building.

The energy consumption of the house in use has been impressive, with electricity bills of £50 a month (including heating and hot water usage from the air source heat pump) so the house is performing as being cost-effective and energy-saving as designed.

Triple glazed timber windows & doors

Green Buildings Store’s ULTRA triple glazed timber windows and doors were chosen for the project. This included entrance doors (in styles GR2 and GL1) and outward opening casement windows with glazing bars, all finished in RAL colour 9018
