ECOgon building, Ipswich

Dodecogon at Brickmarkers' Wood
The ULTRA triple glazed windows from Green Building Store are an important feature of the building, which will help our clients enjoy the beauty of nature in a calm and tranquil setting.

We chose the ULTRA range because of its use of FSC certified timber and cost-effectiveness compared to others we looked at. Green Building Store were also really flexible and helpful in letting us use the different glazing provided by our funders.

Natural materials, good air quality and energy efficiency have been prioritised for a beautiful and unique timber frame newbuild 12-sided building set within Brickmakers Wood in central Ipswich. The building was designed for the Eden-Rose Coppice Trust charity by Architect Clive Butcher and has tried to create the feeling of being immersed in nature yet in a carefully controlled, healthy, tranquil space.

Green Building Store supplied ULTRA triple glazed timber windows and doors for the project.

Design

The construction of the building has very much been a ‘labour of love’ for the charity, with design principles based on the most up-to-date research on natural environments and building construction with regard to well-being.

The building at Brickmakers Wood has been designed to meet the building performance criteria outlined within Saint-Gobain’s Multi Comfort Buildings Program, which focusses on thermal comfort, acoustic comfort, visual comfort, indoor air quality, whilst also minimising energy use. The project has been designed in PHPP (Passivhaus Planning Package) software and is aiming to achieve the PHI Low Energy Buildings Standard.

A therapeutic space

The Eden-Rose Coppice Trust provides safe outdoor natural environments for the support of people living with life-limiting problems, typically cancer. Their work is based on the belief that more than medication is required to affect positive and constructive support of people living with cancer. People affected by life-limiting illness often have unmet emotional and social support needs.

The ECOgon (as it is fondly called) has been established as a supportive centre for those suffering from breast and gynaecological cancers. It will also be used as a healthy stimulating conference and meeting space for businesses, a secure and fun venue for forest school and community gatherings and an educational hub for our young visitors with mental health and behavioural challenges

Good indoor air quality

In many areas of Ipswich, air quality does not meet the nitrogen dioxide annual mean national air quality objective level so the building will have an MVHR system. This cleans pollutants from the outside air and cleans out the indoor air pollution, as well as air-borne bacteria and viruses through the constant air exchange and extraction. To contribute further to a healthy indoor environment, all internal finishes within the building contain either very low or zero VOCs and the aim is to furnish the building using items made from natural materials.

Triple glazed timber windows & doors

Green Building Store’s ULTRA window and door range were chosen for the project. As the project received funding from Saint Gobain, glazing from Saint Gobain was specifically used for the project and installed into the timber frames by Green Building Store.

Green Building Store supplied ULTRA outward opening windows, a large fixed screen and a single door with side lights. The windows and doors were finished in an opaque timber finish (RAL 7015) externally with nature effect on the inside.
