Eco hat-trick!

Third pioneering window launch from Green Building Store

Green Building Store has just launched its Ecopassiv range* – the first range of Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)-certified timber windows and doors suitable for Passivhaus buildings in the UK. The Ecopassiv range combines an ultra low U value of 0.75 W/m2K with FSC 100% timber, offering specifiers one of the highest environmental specifications for windows and doors in the UK, ideal for Passivhaus and Code for Sustainable Homes Level 6 buildings.

The Ecopassiv launch also represents something of a ‘hat-trick’ for Green Building Store as it is the third time the company has pioneered the use of FSC timber in its products. In 2005 its Ecoplus window range became the first to be manufactured in the UK using FSC 100% timber. In 2006 Green Building Store launched the Ecoclad range – the UK’s first range of FSC-certified timber/ aluminium composite windows and doors. Green Building Store is committed to the Forest Stewardship Council certification process, which is the only global timber certification scheme endorsed by the UK government and all major environmental NGOs.

Ecopassiv windows and doors, with ultra low U values, are also among the most thermally efficient available in the UK. Green Building Store actively promotes Passivhaus building design as the best and most cost-effective solution to low carbon construction in the UK. Passivhaus design includes use of: super insulation; stringent airtightness; passive solar gain and mechanical ventilation and heat recovery systems. Passivhaus design requires window U-values to be below 0.8 W/m2K and to be airtight, with minimal thermal bridges. The Ecopassiv range offers a whole window U-value of 0.75W/m2K (and centre pane U-value of 0.6 W/m2K), and includes an insulated frame with polyurethane thermal break. The Ecopassiv range is also very competitively priced with typical prices starting at under £400/m2.

Beck Woodrow, Construction Adviser at FSC UK, said: “We welcome this exciting new addition to Green Building Store’s range of FSC certified windows and doors. Responsibly managed forests have a vital part to play in keeping CO2 locked up, so a product which combines FSC certified timber with the reduction of CO2 from homes and buildings is the perfect partnership”.

Green Building Store will be showcasing the new Ecopassiv range at Ecobuild (Earls Court, 3-5 March 2009) Stand 1833.
