Newbuild Passivhaus project within conservation area
Architect Adrian Cook has designed a Passivhaus certified newbuild 2 bedroom house in a conservation area in Crickhowell, Powys. The building envelope was built by Mike Whitfield, for the selfbuilder client to finish off decoration, fixtures and fittings inside, and to help keep costs down. In response to the conservation area setting the more traditional front elevation of the house is finished with roughcast render, with timber boarding facing the fields to the rear. A green roof tops a single storey living room area to the side of the main house.
Green Building Store supplied the PROGRESSION triple glazed windows and ULTRA Contemporary doors for the project and also designed and supplied the project’s PAUL Novus 300 MVHR system. Green Building Store also supplied the Pro Clima airtightness tapes and membranes for the project.

Adrian Cook commented: “Our Passivhaus consultant Nick Grant recommended the PROGRESSION range to us. We liked the minimalist, simple lines which worked really well with the design. Their frameless appearance is well suited to the timber cladding on the rear of the house, and we made a feature of them on the front elevation with smooth render surrounds in a different colour. The PROGRESSION windows are very well made, and have gone down well with the client and visitors.”
Mechanical ventilation with heat recovery
Green Building Store supplied, designed and commissioned the Novus 300 MVHR system at the project, with initial design input from Alan Clarke.
Adrian Cook commented: “Green Building Store offers a very useful MVHR design service with detailed labelled designs which are a great help with installation. I’ve also used Green Building Store’s MVHR design service for a system at my own house and found it similarly easy to work with.”
The clients are reporting that the MVHR system is working smoothly and quietly. “
