Aiming for Passivhaus, Dundee

Aiming for Passivhaus Dundee with PROGRESSION windows
We chose the PROGRESSION windows and ULTRA doors from Green Building Store to help the project achieve Passivhaus levels of performance.

The PROGRESSION windows work really well in terms of maximising the glazing area and minimising the visual impact of the window frames. They also work well in terms of the detailing of over-cladding of insulation around the frame to minimise thermal bridging.

The crisp narrow sightlines of the PROGRESSION windows match the contemporary aesthetic of the project, including the zinc cladding. The windows and doors look great!

Green Building Store are really knowledgeable and are a pleasure to work with. While on tour in Scotland, the aftersales team visited to admire the windows and make any adjustments to ensure they were working as well as expected.

A contemporary new family 4-bedroom home, designed by Kirsty Maguire Architect Ltd using the Passivhaus methodology, was completed in 2019. The clients were keen to achieve an energy-efficient and comfortable lifetime family home and project-managed the selfbuild themselves.

Green Building Store supplied the PROGRESSION windows and ULTRA entrance and lift & slide doors for the project.

Design

The project was constructed using a timber frame structure with wood-based insulation. The house is situated within mature trees with views over the Tay Estuary. Cladding in Scottish larch timber and zinc was chosen to reflect the woodland setting and the light on the nearby water.  The house has an ‘upside down’ design, with bedrooms on the ground floor and the open plan living area upstairs. The open plan living spaces take advantage of the long views to the landscape while maintaining the privacy of the neighbours.

The shape of the house was deliberately kept to a simple rectangular form to optimise its energy performance and keep costs down but the roofline with four ridge roofs expresses the different rooms within a room at first floor. The ceiling line of the open plan space on the upper floor defines the living room, diing room and kitchen in changes to the internal volume. The project has been designed and built to meet the Passivhaus Low Energy standard, although the owners have opted not to go for Passivhaus certification

Triple glazed timber windows & doors

Green Building Store’s triple glazed timber ULTRA doors (entrance and lift & slide), and PROGRESSION Passivhaus-certified windows were specified for the project. The windows and doors are finished in a paint finish colour RAL 7016 externally, with a clear ‘nature effect’ finish inside.

Included in this was an ULTRA entrance door, with sidelight and large fixed light above and ULTRA lift and slide door at ground floor and first floor. PROGRESSION windows were installed throughout, including the tall and thin 5 metre high window in the entrance lobby.

In terms of keeping costs down on the project, it has worked well to combine the higher specification PROGRESSION windows with the lower cost ULTRA doors”
