Trainee Design Engineer, full-time permanent
Reporting to: Tom Heywood, Design Manager, Services Department
Salary: £19,913, rising to £21,448 after training period, usually 6 months.
To design Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR) systems for Energy Efficient Buildings and Passivhaus buildings
BACKGROUND – The Role
Join our friendly specialist team. Train to be a Design Engineer working with innovative architects & self-builders across the country on ventilation systems for Passivhaus and low energy builds.
The core task is to design systems for new build and retrofit dwellings using a bespoke CAD based 3D design package for ventilation systems. We currently use CADVent, but are moving to MagiCAD. Candidate will already have competence in AutoCAD, but training in CADvent/MagiCAD will be provided on the job if required.
The role also involves liaising with architects and selfbuilders over their design requirements and constraints and generally providing customer support, via telephone and email.
A background in mechanical engineering, architectural technology or building services could suit you for this role alongside an interest in low energy building/Passivhaus/environmental building.

- Methodical nature with attention to detail
- Computer literate with strong Auto CAD competence
- Knowledge of mechanical engineering, architectural technology or building services
- Good communications skills
- Technical aptitude to develop design skills for advanced ventilation system design, including ability to think and communicate in three dimensions
- Ability to work effectively with limited supervision
- Interest in ultra-low energy building technology and Passivhaus
Please ensure that you demonstrate these competences in your application if you are able to do so.
- Graduate in Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Technology, or Building Services or HNC with practical experience.
- Experience of MagiCAD, Revit or other BIM modelling programmes
The post carries annual paid holiday entitlement of 28 days including bank holidays, with the option of swapping a week’s pay for an extra week’s holiday.
