It has taken four years, but a group of Green Building Store volunteers can now celebrate planting the 1,000th oak tree sapling around the edges of Scammondon reservoir.

The planting was carried out by around 15 volunteers from Green Building Store and Colne Valley Tree Society who have worked together on the planting project since 2014. Each year 250 trees have been planted by volunteers to reach the 1,000th tree this year being planted.

It has taken the total amount of trees at Scammonden reservoir to over 80,000, which is double the amount it had when it officially opened to the public in 1971.

Geoff Lomas, Recreation Manager at Yorkshire Water, said: “Scammonden reservoir is one of Yorkshire’s most popular reservoirs. Adding woodland around its edges increases its appeal even more as well as bringing welcome wildlife, biodiversity and carbon storage benefits. Across the region, we own over 2000 hectares of woodland that we manage and conserve to ensure it remains for future generations to enjoy.”

Guy Thompson, Project Manager at the White Rose Forest Project which supports Colne Valley Tree Society and other planting groups across Yorkshire, said: “This tree planting partnership between Green Building Store and the Colne Valley Tree Society is an excellent example of how local businesses can contribute directly to long lasting environmental benefits for people and wildlife as well as lower their carbon footprint.”

Our staff, and their families and friends, really enjoy getting involved with the tree-planting and there is a great sense of community on the day.”

Scammonden Water, located West of the M62 in the Pennine Moors, supplies drinking water to Huddersfield.  It is unique in that it is the only British reservoir embankment to carry a reservoir. At its deepest the reservoir is 52m deep.
