Oxford eco retrofit

PERFORMANCE triple glazed windows and doors at Oxford retrofit
We knew we wanted triple glazing and we wanted to get them from a company that really cared about energy efficiency. Green Building Store were very knowledgeable about triple glazing and the PERFORMANCE range was also good value.

We’re really pleased with the PERFORMANCE windows and doors – they’re fantastic. Our energy consumption over the winter has dropped from 28,000 kWh in the previous winter to 5000 kWh this last winter since all the improvements.

We wished that we had used Green Building Store’s own fitting team to install the windows…From now on I tell everyone to use Green Building Store’s fitting team.

Sue Roberts and Richard Harding recently completed an extensive retrofit of their 1960s detached Oxfordshire home. The house was extremely cold and draughty and Sue and Richard were keen to reduce the house’s carbon emissions and fossil fuel consumption. Green Building Store’s triple glazed timber PERFORMANCE windows and doors were specified for the project.

External wall insulation (EWI) was installed on the outside of the house, as well as warm-roof insulation to the flat roof, thick rafter insulation in the attic rooms, and a novel insulation of the foundations that they dubbed ‘St Lucian’s Skirt’. They tried to seal the house as much as they could, necessitating mechanical ventilation and heat recovery to bring in pre-warmed fresh air. Log burning stoves are the main winter heating, with gas central heating backup. Both solar photovoltaic and solar thermal panels were installed. Water is saved through rainwater harvesting, and a recirculation pump which brings hot water to further-away taps.

Triple glazed timber windows & doors

Green Building Store’s PERFORMANCE doors and inward opening tilt and turn triple glazed windows were chosen for the project. Sue and Richard originally wanted an alu-clad range, but were encouraged by Green Building Store to go for the low maintenance PERFORMANCE timber range.

“We knew we wanted triple glazing and we wanted to get them from a company that really cared about energy efficiency. Green Building Store were very knowledgeable about triple glazing and the PERFORMANCE range was also good value.”

The project proved to be quite problematic as Sue and Richard were let down by the original building team, and the whole project took 1½ years to complete. Sue commented: “We wished that we had used Green Building Store’s own fitting team to install the windows. The carpenter who originally installed the windows had no idea on getting the seals right. From now on I tell everyone to use Green Building Store’s fitting team. Luckily Green Building Store’s snagging team have come to visit us to improve the seals and the fit of the windows. The thing that gives me most pleasure now is opening and shutting the door and feeling everything seal as it should do.”

Sue added: “We’re really pleased with the PERFORMANCE windows and doors – they’re fantastic. Our energy consumption over the winter has dropped from 28,000 kWh in the previous winter to 5000 kWh this last winter since all the improvements.”

MVHR troubleshooting

As part of their eco-retrofit measures Sue and Richard also got an MVHR system (supplied and designed by another company and NOT Green Building Store). The system has been problematic and Sue and Richard had to call in Green Building Store’s MVHR Technical Consultant Andrew Farr to come check over the system. “Again, after this experience, I now advise people to go to Green Building Store for MVHR because they really know what they’re talking about.”
