Guidance from Ecosolutions on the safe removal of lead based paint.
One of the most frequently asked questions on our customer careline and e-mail is about the safe removal of lead based paint.
We believe the only safe method of removing lead based paint (not dissimilar to removing textured coatings prior to in 1985 containing asbestos fibres) is by using a "working wet" system. HOME STRIP technology is a water-based emulsion which stays wet and allows for safe removal of lead based paints without causing any dust particles or lead fumes from solvents or a heatgun to enter the atmosphere.
"Working wet" is the only approved method for operatives in the U.S.A. In fact, new rules issued by the U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development has banned paint removal practices that include the following:
Heatguns at temperatures above I, 100ºF
Dry scraping E
Open flame burnng or torching
Abrasive blasting and machine sanding without high efficiency exhaust systems
Volatile paint strippers such as methylene chloride
With our experience of over 20 years in the paint removal business, we can advise customers on best practice for this purpose. With our latest product X-TEX Textured Coatings Remover this has been found to be safer than all other methods for removing textured coatings pre 1985 containing harmful asbestos fibres.
