Flushing away a fortune

The issue of water conservation is often difficult to take seriously in a country where it never seems to stop raining which is why Green Building Store has just launched a tool that can estimate cost savings, and that gives everybody a valuable reason to minimise their water consumption. For businesses or the public sector, installing water-efficient facilities such as the Airflush® waterless urinal can mean a massive reduction in water usage, and offers the potential to save thousands of pounds every year. The average household uses about 50 litres of water per person every day, just on flushing the toilet, so there are also substantial savings to be made by individuals.
To demonstrate this, Green Building Store have created an online estimator, which enables individuals and organisations to see exactly how much they could be saving through the installation of water-saving technologies. The new calculators are available to download from the Green Building Store website
(www.greenbuildingstore.co.uk), where there are three to choose from. Each one highlights the potential savings made by replacing existing facilities, with a water-efficient equivalent. Users can discover exactly how much they could be saving by installing ES4 low-flush WCs (developed by water conservation experts Elemental Solutions), Airflush® waterless urinals, or standard waterless urinals.
Green Building Store's ultra-efficient ES4 WCs are also on the Water Technology List, which was developed by Defra and the Inland Revenue last year to encourage businesses to invest in water-saving technologies. This means that businesses can benefit in the long-term from minimised water usage, as well as taking advantage of the shortterm gains to be made through claiming an Enhanced Capital Allowance.
To ensure that the estimation is accurate, the total is based on simple information given by the user, such as which water provider they are with and how many days per week the facilities are used for. The calculator is then able to display a graph, which details how much money could be saved per year, for a period of ten years, by replacing standard facilities with water-efficient products.
