The Passivhaus Diaries

Dated: 15/05/2009

BUILDING magazine has just launched the Passivhaus Diaries which will be a fortnightly blog covering the building of our Passivhaus project in Denby Dale, West Yorkshire. The project is being led and managed by Green Building Company (Green Building Store’s construction division) and the diary is being written by Project Leader Bill Butcher, Director of Green Building Store and Green Building Company.

The Denby Dale Passivhaus project will be one of the first certified Passivhaus homes in the UK and is expected to be the first to be built in the British vernacular style, using a cavity wall construction. The house will require minimal heating and will use 90% less energy for space heating than the UK average (15 kWh/m2/annum, as opposed to 150 kWh/m2/annum). Built to a tight budget of £140K, the 118m2 three-bed detached house aims to be an exemplar of how Passivhaus construction can be achieved inexpensively by a small, skilled construction team.

In association with BUILDING magazine, the Passivhaus Diaries will be featuring a regular blog from Project Leader Bill Butcher as the build progresses over the next few months, highlighting along the way the special challenges - and pitfalls - of Passivhaus construction in a UK context. Green Building Store, specialist suppliers of Passivhaus products, will be providing Ecopassiv windows, PAUL MVHR comfort ventilation systems and Pro Clima airtightness membranes and tapes for the project. For more information, go to: www.passivhausproducts.co.uk
