Moores Furniture Group: Water Saving Washrooms

Airflush urinal system
As one of the leading companies in our industry, we have always felt that it is important to set environmental standards and prioritise energy saving and water-efficiency strategies. We were so pleased with the Airflush® waterless urinals when we had them installed in the first washroom three years ago, that we decided to order some more! Not only have the Airflush® urinals cut down water usage but they have also significantly reduced maintenance costs.

Moores Furniture Group is a leading manufacturer and installer of kitchen and bathroom furniture in the UK to both public and private house building markets. Based on 30 acres at Thorp Arch, Wetherby the factory extends over nearly 600,000 square feet and employs over 1,000 staff.

Environmental improvement initiatives at the factory started over 20 years ago, with the installation of two wood waste boilers. Since then Moores have taken a number of measures to improve environmental performance and have led the industry in relation to sustainable practices and consideration of the environment. The factory is a member of Club Green, a scheme run by the Furniture Industry Research Association, and receives regular independent environmental audits.

As part of their environment strategy, Moores looked at areas of high water consumption and reviewed how this could be improved upon to make the factory more water-efficient. In order to reduce water usage it was identified that a number of washrooms at the factory required refurbishments, which took place over a period of three years.

Airflush® waterless urinals from the Green Building Store were installed in the new washrooms and push taps were fitted to restrict water volume. The Airflush® urinals were specified because they were the only waterless urinal on the market that were specifically designed to operate effectively without the use of consumables, minimising running and maintenance costs. The water-efficiency strategy has been a resounding success, with water consumption in the first washroom being reduced by over 50%.
