Low energy retrofit, Scotland
21°’s PERFORMANCE timber windows and doors were chosen as part of an extensive refurbishment of a 130 year old ex head-forester’s house on an old estate in Scotland.
The house is made from sandstone quarried in the local area and the house was in a state of disrepair when purchased by Andrew and Joanne three years ago. The existing windows in the house were single glazed, in many cases were rotting, and not in keeping with the character of the house. The walls needed to be completely re-pointed, the ground floor was gutted.
The objective was to restore the original fabric of the house and also to open up the building internally to make the most of the available space and light by turning a number of smaller spaces into one large living area and with better access to the garden. High levels of insulation and high performance windows and doors were specified by the architect to complement natural and bright internal finishes. A new biomass-only heating system was installed.
