Pupils
flushing with success
ES4 Trials Hailed as a Success in Official Performance Report.
St Leonards Primary School in Hastings have had Green Building Store’s
ES4 water-efficient toilets installed in a jointly sponsored project
run by Southern Water, the Environment Agency and East Sussex County
Council, which was funded by the EU. Southern Water replaced seven
of the school's existing nine litre toilets with the low flush 4.5
litre ES4 models and monitored their performance from summer 2003
until September 2004.
The final project report was published in September 2004 and has
shown that the toilets have not only reduced water consumption,
but have also been performing to a much higher standard than the
previous ones, resulting in substantial monthly savings. Peter Highmore,
Headteacher at St Leonards School said: "It has been a very
worthwhile project and there have been no problems since they were
installed. The new toilets have not only reduced water consumption,
but previous problems with poor flush and unpleasant smells have
completely disappeared."
Measurements indicated that there has been an estimated reduction
of some 38% in the volume of water used for flushing toilets in
the school. Magda Styles, Southern Water's Water Efficiency Manager
said: "The project with St Leonards School has been a great
success and we are delighted with the results. The toilet uses approximately
a third less water than other models available on the market and
can halve the volume if used to replace older models. This is 'the'
water efficient toilet and we will be encouraging our customers
to consider it when replacing their bathrooms."
